TIP-TOP Ten Favorite SPRING Diffuser Blends

Spring Diffuser Blends

There are so many things that I love about spring – the colorful spring bulbs, the temperate days, the fresh smells, the new green grass, the preparation of gardens and the rosy toddler cheeks from playing long and hard outside.

Tulips

In my quest to celebrate the ordinary and the extra-ordinary days of the year, I am creating my bucket list for enjoying SPRING with my people. This list includes:

  • Attend tulip days at our botanical gardens
  • Plant my vegetable garden and help Little Oilist plant hers
  • Greet our new neighbors with a pot of flowers
  • Plant a new fruit tree and some blueberry bushes
  • Go for lots of spring walks
  • Do a deep spring-cleaning
  • Do some spring crafts with the girls
  • Slow down to enjoy the sights and sounds of spring
  • Experiment and create spring diffuser recipes

Spring diffuser recipes? Yes, I have already worked on that last bucket list item. I have so loved experimenting with some wonderful diffuser blends that not only remind me of spring, but have supporting properties for the sneezing and wheezing that can spring bring.

Mommy Oilist Does Whole30

Whole30

Sugar is hard to give up. Carbs are hard to ditch.  Though we need glucose every day to function, most of us tend to binge, crave and eat too many carbs and too much sugar.

Daddy Oilist and I think a lot about what we eat. We enjoy grass-fed beef produced by a local farmer. We load our basket with fresh fruits and veggies each week.

Whole30

Yet, I have begun to see a slight change in my cravings. After a stressful (read BabyOilist doesn’t want to nap) afternoon, I crave some cheesecake. Real cheesecake – made with real sugar – the real deal. Or I want to eat a huge hunk of bread.  All these cravings come after a stressful period, not when I am hungry. To help with this, I engaged in a month-long gentle cleanse called, “Whole30.”

The basics of Whole30 are:

Eating:

  • Whole foods – meats, eggs, lots of veggies, some fruit, nuts, fats and seeds

Not Eating:

  • Grains, dairy, legumes and sugar

This 30 day protocol is not for the faint of heart. There were tough moments. But from day one, I  felt so much better! Yes, there were days that I was extra tired or craved something on the “no” list. But those moments were short lived as I developed a cheat-sheet of tricks that helped me.

Whole30

Here are five basic and practical tips that helped me:

  • Have a basic plan or menu for each day.
  • When hungry, start making and eating food. Make a salad. Cook some chicken. Or just start eating nuts, bell peppers or a grapefruit.
  • Get enough water.
  • Take your vitamins.
  • Get some extra sleep.

Cedarwood

Here is how essential oils helped me get through the Whole30:

  • Cedarwood and Lavender Bath – Sometimes the cravings would come when I was uptight and just needed to relax.
  • Using Young Living essential oils (i.e. Vitality line) in my cooking to add depth, interest and variety. A chopped apple and walnuts with one drop of Thieves Vitality was a yummy, new-found treat!
  • Inhaling and Diffusing – Taking deep inhalations of Grounding, Stress-Away or Valor. This helped refocus my mind, refresh my mood and re-energize my body.
  • Lime and Lemon Water – Squeezing a fresh lemon into a glass of water with one drop of Lime Vitality essential oil was a great pick-me-up.

Whole30

Whole30 is not for the faint of heart, but it is so worth it. Within a week, my brain fog was gone and I felt so alive. Seeing these results and now having some little tricks in my back pocket, I am ready to do this challenge again!

Sparkling Strawberry Limeade

Strawberry Limeade

This is such a refreshing summer drink. It isn’t overly sweet, but it is so cool, so fresh and so yummy. My little Oilist can’t get enough of it and my dear guy gave it two thumbs up! This is the perfect drink to keep on hand when you want “cheat food,” but even more you want to eat well… and have that food taste good.

I love to serve this drink with our favorite Mexican meals. The tartness of the limes along with the sweetness of the strawberries is a winning combination. Add to that the “fizzyness” of the carbonated water, and it is the perfect drink for along side your tacos, tamales or enchiladas.

Sparkling Strawberry Limeade

For the Strawberry Syrup:

8 oz. strawberries, hulled

1/4 cup natural honey (or maple syrup)

1/4 cup filtered water

Strawberry Limeade

Combine strawberries with honey and water in a small saucepan. Bring to a simmer and cook over low heat until the strawberries are soft and the juices are bubbling. This will take about 10 minutes.

Remove from the heat and let mixture sit for 20 minutes.

Strawberry Limeade

Strain through a fine mesh sieve (pressing hard on the solids to extract as much juice as possible) and refrigerate syrup until it is completely cool.

Strawberry Limeade

For the Sparkling Strawberry Limeade:

1 batch of Strawberry Syrup, divided

6 tablespoons fresh lime juice, divided

6 drops of Lime Vitality essential oil, divided

Sparkling water

Ice for serving

Strawberry Limeade

Place 2 tablespoons of the Strawberry Syrup in the bottom of a glass, along with 1 tablespoon of lime juice and 1 drop of Lime Vitality essential oil. Add ice and top off with about 3 ounces of sparkling water. Repeat with the other glasses, stir, garnish as desired and serve immediately.
