Strengthening Exercises with Essential Oils

Strengthening Exercises with Essential Oils

Early morning exercise isn’t for everyone, but it is something that I have come to love. Taking a run on the treadmill is a sure way to wake up. Going for a 30 minute swim at the gym has kick-started many of my days.

However, some of my very favorite early morning exercise times have been a lot slower paced. Last year when I was pregnant with Baby Oilist, it was the early morning hours that I spent doing the hundreds of kegels, pelvic tilts and other homework exercises from our Bradley birth class.

Strengthening Exercises with Essential Oils

To keep me awake and making my way through these relaxing exercises, I had some of my favorite grounding essential oils nearby and would often deeply inhale while I worked out. Even being full of baby and the exhaustion that can come with that, I loved those exercise times. My body started craving those stretches and my mind would look forward to the awakening time of deep breathing and inhaling my favorite essential oils.

Fast forward a year, and many of my exercise times are slow, controlled and strengthening. I have come to love many of the Yoga with Adriene videos. These are great for women and are upbeat, doable and completely FREE on YouTube.

Strengthening Exercises with Essential Oils

The benefits of doing deep breathing, learning balance and stretching tight places has made a difference for me day-to-day. When balancing children, keeping up with a schedule and all the busyness that comes with that, I love these quiet, peaceful, challenging times of exercise.

Once again I like to keep my essential oils nearby to multiply the benefits of my deep breathing. Feeling more alive and having increased wellness (as well as being able to think more clearly!) is how I like to start my day.

Exercise is a wonderful time to really get to know your essential oils by smell. Search your essential oil stash and pick one or two a day to deeply inhale during your workout.

Here are my top four favorites for the slower paced exercise workouts:

Grounding™ – “Is a relaxing and balancing blend of essential oils that provides a stabilizing influence.”

Valor® – “Its woodsy, positive scent comes from a blend of Black Spruce, Blue Tansy, Rosewood, and Frankincense. Its powerful yet calming scent is versatile enough that you can integrate it into your morning and bedtime routines and anywhere in between.”

Frankincense – “Has been sought after since ancient times. The complex aroma of this oil can elevate many aspects of your life. Frankincense essential oil has an earthy, uplifting aroma that’s perfect for grounding and spiritual connectedness. Create a safe and comforting environment when you diffuse or inhale this empowering oil—a perfect opportunity to collect your thoughts.”

Peace and Calming

Peace & Calming® – “Is a gentle, sweet blend of Ylang Ylang, Orange, Tangerine, Patchouli, and Blue Tansy. This fragrant oil is a wonderful addition to your meditation, evening routine, or playtime with the kids. With a comforting, fresh aroma, Peace & Calming oil creates a relaxing environment that’s especially great for homes with children.”

Try out these oils the next time you roll out your mat or are lifting weights. Or experiment with other essential oils and let us know your favorites!

My Essential Oil ORGANIZING Journey

My Essential Oil ORGANIZING Journey

“How do you store your oils?”

That is one of the top questions that I get from fellow oilists. It is a question I wrestled with for several years, too.

In the last year I’ve settled on a good system that works amazingly well. I want to share that with you!

Getting to my current system of essential oils organization was a process – a process that started with a very tiny box.

My Essential Oil ORGANIZING Journey

This box was actually the ring bearer’s box at our wedding and fit about two dozen bottles. But it didn’t take long to outgrow that tiny box.

So we moved our oils to a bigger box – enter massive box that holds about fifty bottles!

My Essential Oil ORGANIZING Journey

This large box worked well, but I began to notice some issues with the functionality of using boxes.

First, I had to pull each bottle out to read the label on the front of the bottle.

Second, there was a lot of wasted space because most of these boxes were so high. I tried getting little boxes to stack on top, but then it became cumbersome to get to the bottles underneath.

Last, many times I needed oils — fast — in the middle of the night for a child who needed support. It was not the time of day to be leisurely turning over bottles to read the label, nor the time of day to be digging through layers of oils in a dark box.

I did find AMAZING label tops for my essential oil bottles that addressed my first issue. I could now see what each bottle was from the top. Yay!

My Essential Oil ORGANIZING Journey

To help with the other two issues, I decided to look for a rack instead. A rack where I could easily organize, view and select my essential oils in my hallway – a very central location between our bedrooms.

I was elated to find the perfect one. It is actually designed for nail polish bottles, but it works perfectly for essential oil bottles.

My Essential Oil ORGANIZING Journey

Now I can see what I need in the middle of the night without digging through a box. Now I have all my oils ready at my fingertips for all the middle-of-the-night issues that come with having two little ones. It is perfect.

My Essential Oil ORGANIZING Journey

I hope my journey and solution helps you find the perfect system for organizing all your wonderful essential oils – in a way that is right for you and your family.

TIP-TOP Ten Favorite SPRING Diffuser Blends

Spring Diffuser Blends

There are so many things that I love about spring – the colorful spring bulbs, the temperate days, the fresh smells, the new green grass, the preparation of gardens and the rosy toddler cheeks from playing long and hard outside.

In my quest to celebrate the ordinary and the extra-ordinary days of the year, I am creating my bucket list for enjoying SPRING with my people. This list includes:

  • Attend tulip days at our botanical gardens
  • Plant my vegetable garden and help Little Oilist plant hers
  • Greet our new neighbors with a pot of flowers
  • Plant a new fruit tree and some blueberry bushes
  • Go for lots of spring walks
  • Do a deep spring-cleaning
  • Do some spring crafts with the girls
  • Slow down to enjoy the sights and sounds of spring
  • Experiment and create spring diffuser recipes

Spring diffuser recipes? Yes, I have already worked on that last bucket list item. I have so loved experimenting with some wonderful diffuser blends that not only remind me of spring, but have supporting properties for the sneezing and wheezing that can spring bring.

Valor Essential Oil – For the Bumps and Bruises of Everyday Life

For the bumps and bruises of everyday life, I love to show a little extra love and care. Taking little falls and stubbing tiny toes are part of every little person’s life.

In fact, the average 2 year-old falls down 38 times a day! Some of those falls are worse than others, and if one of my girls has a big tumble, I always get her checked out by our chiropractor or doctor.

Yet many of these little owies need only a kiss before those chubby legs take her happily away to her next adventure.

But some of the falls need more than a kiss, but less than a doctor’s appointment. That is when I turn to my trusty “bumps and bruises” tool kit:

  • Valor essential oil
  • Arnica
  • Ice

Ice and arnica are wonderful, age-old remedies for everyday bumps and bruises.

Using “Valor” has been a recent discovery for me. It is a wonderful blend of four essential oils that support good circulation and general health. Valor is now one of my most used essential oil blends.

Besides Rosewood and Blue Tansy essential oils, the Valor blend has two powerhouse essential oils. Here are several fun facts about Northern Lights Black Spruce and Frankincense essential oils:

Northern Lights Black Spruce Essential Oil – “…comes from Young Living’s new Northern Lights farm in British Columbia, Canada. You can add it to skin care products or apply topically to help improve the appearance of dry skin or to help maintain the appearance of healthy-looking skin. This oil includes the naturally occurring constituents alpha-pinene, camphene, and beta-pinene.”

Frankincense Essential Oil – “…is considered a holy oil in the Middle East, where it has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years and was one of the gifts given to Christ at his birth. Frankincense is mentioned in one of the oldest known scientific records, the Ebers papyrus, dating from the 16th century B.C. Young Living distills its Frankincense oil from the resin of Boswellia carterii trees located in northern Africa near the Arabian peninsula.”

I keep a little bottle of mildly diluted Valor blend accessible at all times. I attach a rollerball on top of our bottle for easy and gentle application.

If you have little people in your life, Valor is a wonderful blend to have stowed away for those weebles, wobbles and little falls of your babies.

Mommy Oilist Does Whole30

Sugar is hard to give up. Carbs are hard to ditch.  Though we need glucose every day to function, most of us tend to binge, crave and eat too many carbs and too much sugar.

Daddy Oilist and I think a lot about what we eat. We enjoy grass-fed beef produced by a local farmer. We load our basket with fresh fruits and veggies each week.

Yet, I have begun to see a slight change in my cravings. After a stressful (read BabyOilist doesn’t want to nap) afternoon, I crave some cheesecake. Real cheesecake – made with real sugar – the real deal. Or I want to eat a huge hunk of bread.  All these cravings come after a stressful period, not when I am hungry. To help with this, I engaged in a month-long gentle cleanse called, “Whole30.”

The basics of Whole30 are:

  • Whole foods – meats, eggs, lots of veggies, some fruit, nuts, fats and seeds

Not Eating:

  • Grains, dairy, legumes and sugar

This 30 day protocol is not for the faint of heart. There were tough moments. But from day one, I  felt so much better! Yes, there were days that I was extra tired or craved something on the “no” list. But those moments were short lived as I developed a cheat-sheet of tricks that helped me.

Here are five basic and practical tips that helped me:

  • Have a basic plan or menu for each day.
  • When hungry, start making and eating food. Make a salad. Cook some chicken. Or just start eating nuts, bell peppers or a grapefruit.
  • Get enough water.
  • Take your vitamins.
  • Get some extra sleep.

Here is how essential oils helped me get through the Whole30:

  • Cedarwood and Lavender Bath – Sometimes the cravings would come when I was uptight and just needed to relax.
  • Using Young Living essential oils (i.e. Vitality line) in my cooking to add depth, interest and variety. A chopped apple and walnuts with one drop of Thieves Vitality was a yummy, new-found treat!
  • Inhaling and Diffusing – Taking deep inhalations of Grounding, Stress-Away or Valor. This helped refocus my mind, refresh my mood and re-energize my body.
  • Lime and Lemon Water – Squeezing a fresh lemon into a glass of water with one drop of Lime Vitality essential oil was a great pick-me-up.

Whole30 is not for the faint of heart, but it is so worth it. Within a week, my brain fog was gone and I felt so alive. Seeing these results and now having some little tricks in my back pocket, I am ready to do this challenge again!

How to Change and Place A Young Living Essential Rewards Order

Changing ER Order

Do you want to place your monthly Essential Rewards Order with Young Living, but not sure how to do it?

As a brief recap, there are two types of orders that you can place with Young Living.

A Quick Order is an order you can place whether you are signed up for Essential Rewards or not. It places your order on the spot when you hit “Submit Order,” but doesn’t accrue Essential Rewards (comparable to “Young Living dollars”).

An Essential Rewards Order is a monthly order that you opt in to when you sign up for the Essential Rewards program. Read the benefits of this program HERE. Your monthly Essential Rewards order can be changed every month to include what you need and want.

In this pictorial, I will walk you step-by-step through changing and placing your monthly Essential Rewards order.

Favorite Infant Immune Supporting Blend

Baby Oils

My Baby Oilist has her mouth on everything. She tastes toys, books, and alas, crumbs almost every day, and not to mention her own little digits that touch everything.

Good habits of cleaning and hygiene are the most important factors in keeping your babies and homes well.

But when my baby’s immune system need support, I turn to my trusty and favorite Baby Immune Supporting Essential Oil Blend.

I combined some of my favorite essential oils that are gentle, yet are still super powerful and effective. Balsam Fir, Lavender, Roman Chamomile and Orange work together to support excellent immune function.

Baby Oils

As with all things you apply or give to your children, do your research and use your best judgment on what your child needs.

Here is the exact recipe that I use for my littlest Oilists – from babyhood to two years old. I use equal parts of this essential oil blend and a carrier oil on my one-year-old. I would dilute this more for a younger baby or less for an older toddler. Feel free to dilute this recipe more or less depending on the age of your child and your needs.

Baby Oils

Favorite Infant Immune-Supporting Blend

25 drops Balsam Fir Essential Oil

15 drops Orange Essential Oil*

20 drops Lavender Essential Oil

10 drops Roman Chamomile Essential Oil

70 drops V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Oil Complex

I combine all these drops in an empty Lavender essential oil bottle with a roller ball top. This makes it easy and tidy to apply.

Baby Oils

I roll this recipe on the feet, the chest and back several times a day when my Baby Oilist needs it.

I hope this blend blesses your babies as much as it has mine!

*With a supported, healthy immune system, Baby Oilist enjoyed some sunshine during this photo shoot. Be aware though that Orange essential oil, like all citrus oils, can cause photosensitivity, so avoid applying it to exposed skin before spending time out in the sun.

Loving through the Realities of Daily Life

Peace and Calming

I have an amazing husband. Almost every single morning he makes a pan of eggs for our breakfast. He sets aside 15 precious minutes in the early morning for us to connect and talk before the hustle and bustle of work and children. He loves to talk, and he loves to listen…and not just listen, but he is really good about tuning in and thinking about what I am saying. He is a kind man. Have I mentioned that every night he reads bedtime stories to our Little Oilist and washes the dinner dishes? Yes, I have one amazing man.

I also have some amazing daughters. They are SO cute. Every morning they wake up happy to see me and want to cuddle. They have the cutest girly giggles. They love to dance to music. They have beautiful eyes – one with the brightest, biggest blue eyes and the other with the warmest framed brown eyes. I love looking into those eyes and kissing those chubby cheeks. Yes, I am one blessed mommy.

But you didn’t come here to hear me gush about Daddy Oilist.

Or Little Oilist or Baby Oilist.

And that is okay.

Though to be totally candid, on some occasions, we don’t feel all “gushy” about each other either. We are all humans and a work in progress. We love each other SO much and though we have never had any big disagreements, sometimes little, silly, daily issues can start to grind on us. Issues with leaving on time, forgetting to do what we committed to do, crabbiness and the like start to wear on those around us.

Peace and Calming

Here is where I let you on in my secret for changing my attitude to these common frustrations before they fester and become big problems:

Pick a time when there are no frustrations between you and your closest family members or those that you are in contact with the most. Make a cup of tea or go to a coffee shop; relax. Enjoy smelling some of your essential oils. While you are happy and peaceful create a list of 50 things you love about those people closest to you. If you can, write out that list with the loving mindset you had for that person on the day you married him or the day you birthed him. By writing quickly and with a loving heart, you will most likely get to 50 things before you know it.

Place your list(s) somewhere very safe where you won’t forget.

The next time there is a small conflict, issue or irritation, don’t say anything you might later regret. Instead pray, put on your chosen oil (smell deeply and RELAX) and read your list. Before you get through it, you will probably be smiling and have a much kinder, loving attitude toward that amazing person in your life.

I have found this to be so effective. I love dwelling day-to-day on the wonderful qualities of my husband and daughters. They are a blessing, and so are yours.

With a comforting, fresh aroma, Peace & Calming oil creates a relaxing environment that’s especially great for homes with children.”

Copaiba – A Mommy’s Best Friend

Copaiba for Teething

My most exciting essential oil discovery in 2015 was Copaiba. I have come to love this woodsy, calming scent, but even more I have fallen in love with its soothing capability during times of teething.

My Baby Oilist often refuses certain feedings when she is teething. She’ll begin to eat and then start crying and refuse anything in her mouth for several hours. Early on when she was exclusively breastfeeding, I would begin to feel alarmed by her refusal, especially if it was during the night. Rocking, swinging, singing, distracting often offered little to no relief.

A friend suggested I try applying one drop of Copaiba essential oil topically on her gums. The first time I experimented with this, she calmed down immediately. Coincidence?

Copaiba for Teething

This past week Baby Oilist has been working on getting her 1-year-old molars in. At first, [I’d change the word order and put “with tears” here] she refused to eat. I remembered my success with Copaiba earlier in her life and ran to my essential oil collection to get it.

Her brown eyes searched my face as I gently rubbed a tiny drop on her bulging gums. She usually doesn’t let someone else’s finger in her mouth while she is teething. This time, however, she placed her hands on my wrist to keep my hand in place while massaging her gum with the oil.

Once again she was very calm after this application and readily went on to eat after this.

Copaiba for Teething

Happy baby equals a happy mommy!

Here are some additional forms of relief that I have found to be helpful:

Chiropractic adjustments – I love to take them in for a chiropractic adjustment. They sleep better, nurse better and seem much more relaxed.

Amber necklace – There is a lot of controversy if this actually works. The basic idea is that the naturally occurring resin in the amber beads permeates through the skin and works as a natural pain neutralizer. I have used these necklaces with both my babies and seem to see a positive difference. I definitely notice a significantly reduced amount of drool when they are wearing their necklaces. Plus, those necklaces are just so cute!

Frozen foods – If the baby is a little older, frozen fruit (cut in appropriate sizes) is always a special treat. Bananas, mangos, kiwi or blueberries are excellent ways to feed a tender-mouthed baby.

Dark Chocolate Gingerbread Truffles

Gingerbread Truffles

My Little Oilist and I wanted to make something chocolate for her daddy’s November birthday when I came across this recipe for gingerbread truffles. Knowing that Daddy Oilist enjoys variety, we decided to make this healthy dessert for his special celebration.

Following his birthday, those of us at home had to practice discipline because we wanted to eat these while he was away at work! I enjoyed the “holiday” taste of cinnamon, ginger, clove and nutmeg while still eating something good for me – something that was without processed sugar and a lot of carbs. As for Little Oilist, she enjoys anything chocolate and gave this a big thumb’s up!

 Gingerbread Truffles

6 ounces dark chocolate (at least 50 percent chocolate), finely chopped

1 tablespoon coconut oil

1 tablespoon honey or maple syrup (add more to taste if desired)

1/3 cup coconut milk

Pinch of sea salt

2 drops Cinnamon Bark essential oil

2 drops Ginger essential oil

1 drop Clove essential oil

1 drop Nutmeg essential oil

Unsweetened cocoa powder for rolling

·  Place the chopped chocolate in a heat-proof bowl and set aside. In this case, I made my own dark chocolate with cocoa powder, butter, vanilla and a little bit of stevia.

Gingerbread Truffles

·  Combine the coconut oil, sweetener, coconut milk and salt in a small saucepan and bring to a simmer (do not boil).

Gingerbread Truffles

·  Pour mixture over reserved chopped chocolate. Let stand for 1-2 minutes; then stir gently until completely melted and smooth.

·  Stir in the drops of essential oil.

·  Refrigerate until mixture is just set; about 2 hours.

Gingerbread Truffles

·  With a small scoop or spoon, make 12 balls, rolling each between the palms of your hands to smooth.

·  Place about ¼ cup of cocoa powder in the bottom of a shallow plate or dish. Roll each truffle in the cocoa until coated.

·  Refrigerate for at least 15 minutes to firm.

Gingerbread Truffles

·  Let stand at room temperature 10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

Gingerbread Truffles

Truffles can be refrigerated in a sealed jar or airtight container for up to two weeks.
